Reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change is a key priority for all orders of government in Canada. Provincially, the heating and cooling of the buildings we live, work and play in contribute about one-quarter of all Ontario greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Municipalities are looking for options to help them provide their residents with the support and resources needed to advance their energy efficiency opportunities and help build the local capacity within their local contractor and renovator market.
However, municipalities are concerned by the administrative burden associated with delivering energy retrofit programs and want to reduce duplication across programs and better support scale-up opportunities. To address this goal, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) and Clean Air Partnership (CAP) are working together to support municipalities to develop and deliver community-based retrofit programs through the BetterHomes Ontario Consortium.
